Stop Super PACs in Massachusetts. Call Steve Brewer!

Dear MoveOn member,

We thought this message from our friends at Common Cause Massachusetts, MassVOTE Action Fund, Public Citizen and other organizations in Massachusetts was important enough to pass along:

The Massachusetts State Legislature is considering a resolution (S.772), which calls on Congress to pass a constitutional amendment overturning Citizens United and makes it clear that democracy is for people, not corporations.

The resolution has support from state legislative leadership and has been reviewed by key committees. But legislative hurdles and other political issues have pushed the resolution aside—and there are only a few days left before the end of the session.

To break the delay, we need to make sure state lawmakers know this resolution is a priority.

Can you call State Senator Stephen Brewer right away? Here's where to call:

If this resolution passes, Massachusetts would be among the first states to go on the record in support of a constitutional amendment.

A coalition of statewide and national organizations are pushing legislators to pass this resolution. And, Massachusetts towns and cities are leading the way—already 62 towns statewide have passed similar local amendment resolutions.

We need to show them their constituents are part of a broad movement demanding action—-not only to convince them that overturning Citizens United and rejecting the idea that corporations have the same constitutional rights as people is the right thing to do, but also that it's possible.

We deserve a country where our elected officials are not bought and paid for by big corporations. The clock is ticking for Massachusetts. There is still time to put the state on the map.

Please call Sen. Brewer today.

Then let us know how it went:

Thank you,

P.S. In case you didn't know, the Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission U.S. Supreme Court decision opened the floodgates for unlimited amounts of corporate money to flow into our political system. The results have been absolutely corrosive to our democracy. Unbelievably, the court came to this decision based on the notion that a corporation is legally a "person" entitled to some of the same constitutional rights as ordinary people. A constitutional amendment is the long-term solution we need to restore our rights and our democracy.
