We deserve a government of, for and by the people — not one where our elected officials are bought and paid for by big corporations.
But due to the disastrous Citizens United vs. FEC Supreme Court decision, we're powerless to stop the corrosive torrent of corporate money flooding into our elections.
Now two states, Colorado and Montana, are fighting back with crucial statewide ballot measures supporting a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.
This is the first time we've seen anything like this on a statewide level. Strong, grassroots campaigns in both states will help show the entire country that there's a powerful movement to overturn Citizens United.
Both ballot measures would instruct their respective state's congressional delegation to support a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.
Passing a constitutional amendment will be a difficult task. But it might be the only thing we can do to get unlimited corporate money out of politics and re-establish the common sense and democratic view that only people are people, not corporations.
So it's crucial we pass both of these ballot measures to show politicians across the country that their constituents are part of a broad movement demanding action — not only to convince them that overturning Citizens United is the right thing to do, but also that it's possible.
And since these state fights will turn into a national story, a little bit of money to make sure that they pass will go a long way to putting this issue squarely on the national agenda.
Please chip in $5 to build a grassroots campaign to overturn Citizens United.
