Fwd: 100 Years Ago: "You Are What Your Reading Makes You," The San Francisco Call, Sept. 20, 1913

You are subscribed to Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers for Library of Congress.

This information has recently been updated, and is now available.

A century ago the San Francisco Call (San Francisco, CA) announced "Good reading marks the difference between a broad and a narrow perspective in life - between a position in the lead and one in the line..." and advertised Dr. Eliot's Five-Foot Shelf of Books, also known as "the Harvard Classics." This fifty-volume set, available "at only a few cents a day," included more than 300 authors and 76,000 indexed subjects. In Dr. Eliot's words, "...reading of these books...will give any man the essentials of a liberal education, even if he can but devote to them fifteen minutes a day."... Join the Library of Congress in celebrating the world of reading this weekend during the National Book Festival (http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/ ) on the National Mall, Washington, DC. ... Do These 'End Times' Bible Verses Explain Syria?

As the United States debates what, if anything, should be done in response to allegations that the Syrian government used chemical weapons on its own people, there's a theological debate brewing, too. Bible experts aren't just sparring over whether the U.S. military should attack; they're also going back-and-forth over theories surrounding the End Times (events surrounding Jesus Christ's return). Read Faith Editor Billy Hallowell's story on this important topic HERE.

'Expect Retaliation': Assad Warns American Journalist
Syrian President Bashar Assad is warning there will be retaliation against the U.S. for any military strike launched at his country in response to a chemical weapons attack. He said the U.S. would "pay the price if you are not wise with dealing with terrorists," and also said any strike would be supporting the same Al Qaeda terrorists who struck America on 9/11. Watch the clip from CBS News HERE.

Picture this: You get home after a long day at work, step out of the car and you're instantaneously held-up by a group of men who attempt to steal your vehicle by force. This is the exact scenario that Kari Bird, a mother of three who works full-time and is attending law school, encountered when she arrived home around 11:30 p.m. last Wednesday. Rather than cowering, Bird became an unsuspecting hero after she pulled out a gun and defended herself. Not only did bird prevent them from taking her vehicle,  she also sent them running. Get all the details and watch the local news coverage of the story HERE.

Obama Hates This "Hidden" Account...
Did you know there's a secret tax-free account that pays out, on average, 300% to 400% more than long-term CDs and that YOU DON'T NEED TO REPORT TO THE IRS? It's true. But government doesn't want you to know about this account even though both JFK and FDR had accounts.
Click here to find out the shocking reason why...
Did Syrian government forces launch a chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburbs last month without obtaining permission from President Bashar Assad? That's the assessment of German intelligence sources cited by the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag. Read the details and learn why it may not matter in the big picture HERE.

It's no secret that TheBlaze's S.E. Cupp is an atheist. The conservative commentator has regularly spoken openly about her theological views. But in a promo for her gig on CNN's relaunch of "Crossfire," the co-host focuses on why she believes being both a conservative and an atheist isn't a contradiction. Watch the video with S.E. explaining her thinking HERE.

Police say Charlie "Chris" Bates had just finished raping four women at gunpoint after tying up the four men who were with them in a Tampa, Fla. apartment. Bates then found what he thought was his next victim, a woman sitting on her porch at another apartment complex. The woman happened to be a person of strong faith who did something that led to the end of Bates' reign of terror. Get the whole story HERE.

U.S. Customs Delays Gun-Toting Obama Comic Book Because Of...

As TheBlaze reported two months ago, the limited-edition comic book with a cover featuring a well-armed, zombie-killing President Obama was set to hit stores on September 11. But some are concerned that the special issue might never see the light of day. Late Sunday night, TheBlaze learned from the Obama cover artist Dave Dorman that the release for the book has been delayed by U.S. Customs. See the cover and learn the reported reason its release is being delayed HERE.

Op-Ed From Glenn Beck: Why I Am Against War In Syria
As heard Monday morning on Beck's radio program:
The anti-war Glenn Beck? I'll admit it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. After all, I used to be guy on the sidelines cheering the 'freedom on the march' argument every time a president wanted to lob missiles or put boots on the ground somewhere. But that all changed for me several years ago when I began to realize this democracy building mentality was a progressive mentality.
Read the entire op-ed from Glenn HERE.

A video uploaded to YouTube ten days ago purports to show a man paying his school tax bill in one dollar bills.
The man - a home schooler - carried a large duffel bag full of bundled cash to the local tax office to pay his taxes. Watch the reaction from the clerk on duty HERE.

The Surprise Activist Who Is Calling For A 'Renewed Christianity'
Christians who believe that being gay is a sin that violates biblical tenets now have some competition among their own ranks. As the debate over gay marriage continues to intensify at the local, state and national level, a new group has gathered for the sole purpose of giving "LGBT-affirming Christians a means of proclaiming to the world" that there's nothing sinful about being gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender. Meet activist Dan Savage and learn why his involvement in this movement is considered to be significant HERE.
