Flowers wilt and chocolates are gone before you know it! Maybe this year you'd like to give a gift that has real staying power. The American Flag of Faces may just be the answer! The Flag of Faces is an exhibit online and at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum which features the faces of Americans from every walk of life and across the generations.
Think about becoming a part of this American tapestry by adding the picture of your loved one, or you and your loved one. Or you could add the picture of your parents or your loved one's parents as a reminder of love across the generations. That's what Bess from Queens, NY did.
Her father Louis (Elias) was born in Daphni, Sparta, Greece where he was a shepherd until age 16, when he packed his belongings and sailed to America, arriving at Ellis Island in 1909. He joined the U.S. Army and earned his citizenship serving as a cook in WW I. In 1930 he met Marika, who had just arrived from Greece. They married in 1933 and raised their family in Brooklyn and Queens.
In celebration of her parents, Bess uploaded their wedding photo on the Flag of Faces. She can see it online whenever she wants, share it with family and friends and view it on the Flag of Faces exhibit when she visits Ellis Island. And she knows that it will always be there as a lasting public tribute to her family at Ells Island, America's premier monument to family heritage.
You can add your photo today. It's quick, easy and your picture will be posted online at FlagofFaces.org by February 14* for your special Valentine remembrance. And it's your gift to Lady Liberty too because your donation helps support our work at the Statue and Ellis Island.
Happy Valentine's Day!
*Only photos submitted online by Noon E.T. Feb. 14 are guaranteed to be posted on Valentine's Day. Submissions by U. S. Mail will be uploaded as soon as possible after they are received.
